WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?

About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, with the risk doubled in men with a positive family history. This makes it an important public health problem. As most men show no symptoms in the early curable stage, many national agencies recommend screening i.e. testing for the disease in order to diagnose it early. If not detected early, prostate cancer can be a common cause of death in men and screening has been proven to reduce death from prostate cancer.

  • All men aged 55-69 years should discuss screening for prostate cancer with their urologists.
  • Screening above the age of 70 needs to be individualized based on the man’s general health.
  • Those who have any urinary symptoms need to consult a urologist to determine if screening is needed.
  • Higher risk men including smokers, men of African descent and men with a positive family history should consider screening in their 40’s.

WHAT SCREENING TESTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PROSTATE CANCER? WHAT IS THE PSA TEST?

  • A prostate examination (digital rectal examination) by your urologist is recommended annually above the age of 55 years.
  • The most important screening test remains a simple blood test known as Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA). A low or normal PSA level usually indicates normal prostate health. An elevated PSA level (the normal range depends on age and other factors but generally is <4ng/ml) may signal a problem.
